BC takes on Moorpark in extra inning thriller

In the regular season opener the Renegades, went to the 13th inning against Moorpark.

The Gades started hot, scoring 2 runs early in the second giving their starter some runs to work with.  Bakersfield’s starter David Villegas went 6 innings with 7 strikeouts, but gave up 4 earned, with 3 in the third inning. Both teams would trade runs, but the Renegades were still down 4-3 after the 5th. BC would tie it up in the 6th after infielder Andrew Townson scored on a throwing error by Moorpark making this game 4-4.  The game would stay tied up going into the 9th inning where BC’s outfielder Alex Rodriguez hit a ringing double sparking a hopeful fire for the Renegades. Rodriguez’s double would be followed up by a strikeout, a single, and the inning ended on a double play, killing BC’s hopes of a 9th inning walkoff.

Moorpark’s Andrew MacFarlane hit a single, scoring a run in the 10th to give Moorpark the lead. That lead however would not last very long as catcher/first baseman Xabi Iparraguirre hit a towering solo homer to tie this game back up for the Renegades in the bottom of the 10th. Suddenly the game was back to square one, tied at 5 a piece going into the 11th. After a couple scoreless innings Moorpark would tee off on the Gades scoring 3 runs in the 13th inning off of pitcher Tim Ruiz. Bakersfield would get a chance to at least tie this one up again in the bottom half. A leadoff walk would be followed by a huge triple by Rodriguez, again trying to start a rally for the Renegades.  Then a single by outfielder Jacob Baker would bring Bakersfield within one run as it was 8-7 with two outs in the 13th. That single would bring up Jose Ruiz and he would hit a towering flyball deep into left field, and just as you thought he walked it off with a blast, the ball was caught by the Moorpark left fielder which would mean the end to the extra inning showdown.

Ruiz took the loss, Moorpark’s Andrew Tarazon was credited with the win, and Owen Izzo collected the save. BC will be back at it taking on Taft at home on the 27th, and Moorpark once again on the 28th.
