Farmer’s market opens in East Bakersfield

Logan King, Reporter

Kern County is home to an abundance of food and culture. The best reflection of this abundance is seen in a local farmers market.

Bakersfield is home to multiple farmer’s markets spread disproportionately across the city. These farmers markets have been limited to the west side of town. However, those days are over. The east side finally has its own!

Located in the Kaiser Permanente parking lot at 3700 Mall View Road the market is scheduled for every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.

Many of the vendors are local favorites like The Hen’s Roost, Martin’s Meats, Pickalittle Farms, Poke Express, and Grizzly Cycles. The east side market is smaller than its west side counterparts but that did not affect the spirits of patrons. Many of whom were east side residents.

The market provides something the east side has been missing. A communal outlet for people desirous of healthy food options. The fresh organic produce was in abundance. Available were leafy greens, fresh fruits, strawberries, and juices. Hen’s Roost provided their line of organic nut butter and prepared salads.

Another crowd pleaser came in the form of coffee. The coffee vendor, Rig City Roasters, provided the caffeine to early morning market goers. The fav

orite was their drip coffee provided by a pour-over brewing system.

After coffee, there were many great food options with an omnivorous angle. Martins Meats was smoking everything from chicken to brisket. We Be Grubbin’ provided the plant-based spin on Mac and Cheese, Pulled Pork, and Collard Greens.

Another great vendor was Grizzly Cycles who encourages people to ride their bicycles to the market. They provide free and safe parking for your bicycle. If needed they also give free safety checks on bikes left with them.

The Eastside farmers market was bustling with activity and excitement. The Bakersfield farmers market scene has neglected the east side for far too long. From the looks of the market goers, they intend to be shopping here for many Saturdays to come.
