Senoras y Senores, step right up! Take a chance and claim your prize! Bakersfield Colleges’ very own Extended Opportunities and Program Services hosted a Loteria event in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. The event was held Wednesday Sept. 24 in the Fireside Room.

 Loteria is a traditional Mexican board game of chance, like Bingo but instead of numbered balls, they use cards. These cards contain images of everyday objects and their names.

Each round of the game followed different rules. Diagonal, four across, four down, border only, or corners only. One game requires you to have an X to win. Some students exchanged cards while others used two or three to increase their chances of winning. If you won, someone would come to verify it before you were allowed to claim your prize.

Two students who wished to remain anonymous won a total of three times over the course of several games.

Esquite and non-alcoholic Sangari, juice, and water was served while they were serenaded by classic Mexican musicians. A once full prize table became baren and empty by the end of the event. Most everyone won something.

According to EOPS staff this is their second time hosting this event. It’s an opportunity for students to come relax, mingle and enjoy a bit of Hispanic culture. The overall event was well organized and very fun welcoming a community of all races, heritage, religion, and gender to participate in a game that has been passed down from generation to generation.
