Kern Promise did not let their students down on the morning of Wednesday, April 22, at their end-of-the-year-ceremony which was definitely an occasion worthy of all the cheers that took place. It was hosted by Transfer Pathways Counselor Rene Deniz, and Transfer Pathways Advisors Sandra Perez and Rodrigo Rios. They were prepared with many prizes lined up on a table as awards for variety of games throughout the ceremony. The students could choose from hydro flask, headphones, portable charger and even speakers.
Bakersfield College offers this Kern Promise program as an opportunity for students who are extremely motivated to help them complete their major at BC in two years then transfer to a university.
“Then you do your two years at the university or ‘Finishing Four’ which is a partnership with CSU Bakersfield,” explained Rios.
Perez, Rios and Deniz each handed out a few awards to select number of students who stood out to them in special ways. Whether it was going above and beyond with GPA’s or facing adversities and still pushing through.
The hosts also selected six of their own students to speak as panelists who are transferring to other universities in the Fall semester. Here are a few of their answers to the prompts.
Panelists Eugene Ibos answered on question with, “I kind of wanted to go into technology and hopefully make some new tech… help our world.”
“I kind of have a funny story of how I choose my major… I love those films especially ‘Devil Wears Prada.’ That movie influenced my whole life. I wanted to be Andy Sachs. I wanted to be a journalist,” explained panelist Leilani Nordine, “Art and Entertainment Editor.”
Another panelist named Lucy Rodriguez explained how simply watching, “Shark Week, and I was obsessed,” at a young age turned her onto her goal to one day major in Marine Biology.
Panelist Erika Campos said, “At the beginning I didn’t believe in myself here, so now if I look back and I see my progress I feel like I think I can do this.”
Diego Alfaro, another panelist, is preparing for dorm life by learning life skills already and said, “I’m learning how to cook more. I went from making scrambled eggs to making scrambled eggs with rice.”
“I went to the dorms… and it was really amazing. I really decided to be independent and away from home,” explained panelist Yajaira Ortega.
This program has so many opportunities for bright young students that get involved in the program such as these six amazing panelists that spoke at the ceremony.
“For future incoming freshmen, to take advantage of the program because again there is benefits for the program…” Rios continued, “its beneficial to help you out through your transfer journey.”
