On April 15, the event called a Political Lock-in took place at the Levan Center from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., this meeting allowed students to have lunch along with discussing political topics.
When the meeting started Professor Reggie Williams opened with a discussion about political topics such as immigration issues. This allowed fellow students to discuss freely with each other about the topic. Before the discussion started, Williams explained the meaning of the political lock-in, he used the book called “The Structure of Science Revolution” by Thomas S. Kuhn to elaborate on the meaning. He gave some ideas from the book to fellow students such as life experiences and certain events in history.
Williams bought up yes or no questions for students to start a conversation. Due to many people having strong opinions about politics, it gave students the opportunity to discuss the topic of “changing a person’s mind.”
He had provided some examples of the topic, such as anyone can have a strong opinion about political topics, along with how often it’s brought up at family gathering. Throughout the discussion fellow students were agreeing on what Williams had stated. A fellow student even mentioned how a person from their family would not speak to them for weeks due to their differences in opinion.
Throughout the meeting Williams had mentioned there isn’t a point to try and change a person’s mind when they’re so confident with their opinion; however, try to get a better understanding on why someone’s opinion is different, possibly a person’s mind can change over time.
