The location for Bakersfield College’s swim team’s practices has become a moving target.
The Bakersfield College Swim team had been training and preparing for the Annual Alumni meet on January 24, but was unfortunately cancelled due to complications with the Bakersfield College pool. Between practices, Coach Moon received updates on the plans for pool renovations making the possibility of the Alumni event or any regular practice schedules unclear. So far it is undetermined exactly when this project will be complete or what it entails, but the school has received an estimate of March 2027.

These conditions add complications for the swimmers and coaches. Starting next week, until further notice, the athletes will have to meet at the main Bakersfield College campus for weight room training, drive to Garces High School to swim, then drive back to campus to continue their classes accordingly, All of which needs to be done at least once a day, Monday through Saturday. On Mondays and Wednesdays the swimmers return a second time to swim at the Garces pool.
The swimmers find this complication difficult to manage with busy schedules but will adjust to the circumstances for the interest of the team. The swimmers expressed some concerns about how this renovation impacts their season.
“It’s disappointing to not be able to swim at our home pool.” Nicolas Lira, second year swimmer said, “While it is fun to travel, the team would have loved to be able to swim at BC. It makes it easy for our family and friends to come support us.”
The athletes expressed the disappointment of not being able to host meets at their home pool. Exayana Dominguez, second year swimmer said,
“Oh, definitely upset, mostly because I just looked forward to our home meets and having the comfortability of swimming in our own space.”

But as always, the Renegades adapt and overcome. Like Matthew Moon, the head swim coach says, “So unfortunate for the current athletes and the day-to-day as of now, but it will be a good boost for future athletes and future students here at Bakersfield College.”
