After the success of the 2023 film “Scream 6,” fans of the franchise had to wait three years for the next part. “Scream 7” has officially released on Feb. 27.
The film is set in the small suburban town of Pine Grove, Indiana. In this seemingly safe town, that Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her family live in. Sidney must confront another ghost face who is now after her daughter Tatum Evans (Isabel May). However, this ghost face doesn’t seem new at all. He seems like an old friend of Sidney’s, is it possibly Stu Macher (Mathew Lillard)? Sidney, Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), and Tatum must figure out if Stu has returned from the dead or if it’s all deepfakes/AI.
The film was decent at best. The movie did have some good comedic moments such as calling Tatum’s boyfriend (Ben Brown) “a Gen Z Billy Loomis.” Along with Gale being ecstatic about getting her interview she’s been craving with Sidney. Apart from these comedic moments, the film was mostly centered around nostalgia.
This nostalgia that was used throughout the film is what truly gets the audience hooked. Fans get to see not only Stu’s house from the first and fifth movie, but there are also many references to Sidney’s past like her acting in college, that fans see in the second film. They also go over some of the events that happened in the sixth movie which was set in New York. We also see some old familiar faces such as Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding).
Even with this nostalgia, the best part by far had to be the gore. Each death scene was well thought out and fit every character. I really enjoyed the opening scene. The first death is what shows if a slasher film will be great or not.
Apart from good death scenes, the film struggled a bit with their characters. The character that lacked the most in the film had to be Tatum. Tatum at times was very annoying, especially when ghost face was running after her and trying to murder her. Some of her dialogue was also weird at times and felt very out of character. Tatum’s friends’ acting was also a little weird at times too, especially when they were trying to relate to this new generation.
Even with the weird dialogue at times, the ending felt very rushed. Overall, the film was decent; however, if one likes a good nostalgic feeling then you might enjoy the film.
