With limited activities to do in Bakersfield, families, couples, and friends are left to figure out what they can do in this boring town. The historical Fox Theater has started an event called “Cults and Classics” during the months of October to May, they put on many different films every other Monday; doors open at 6 p.m. and the movie starts at 7 p.m.
On March 9, Fox Theater played the classic film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) directed by Howard Hawks. In the film Lorelei Lee (Marylin Monroe) is a showgirl who gets engaged to the wealthy Gus Esmond (Tommy Noonan). Gus’s father disapproved of this engagement and sends private detective Ernie Malone (Elliott Reid) to follow Lorelei and her friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) while on a cruise to France.
Before entering the theater, if one hasn’t bought their tickets they can purchase them at the ticket office. Tickets for “Cults and Classics” is $5. Otherwise, if you purchased your ticket you can walk right in after getting checked in. After checking in or purchasing your tickets, one can go to the concession to order either popcorn, candy or soda for a very affordable price.
The environment of the theater was very welcoming. It was great to see different generations all coming together to watch a classic film. It was also good to see some audience members dressing up and singing along with Marylin Monroe and Jane Russell throughout the film.
Before watching the film, the theatre created a 1950’s atmosphere especially with some of the advertisement videos and the fun facts about the Fox Theatre. One advertisement that stuck out the most was “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” (1957). This ad is what fully captures viewers into that 1950s aesthetic.
Overall, Fox Theater’s “Cult and Classics” is a fun activity for the whole community to enjoy watching a film together. The next film they’ll be showing is “Boomerang” (1992) on March 26 at 6 p.m.
