Bakersfield College softball didn’t have the fast start it wanted Friday Jan. 30, but the finish was everything a season opener should be.
After a slow beginning, the Renegades rallied together to defeat Fresno 5-4 at home, turning a quiet afternoon into a loud, exciting win that set a good tone for the season ahead.

Early on, Bakersfield struggled to find its rhythm. Fresno jumped ahead and kept pressure on the Renegades, while BC’s offense took time to locate their footing. Hits were hard to come by, and the scoreboard stayed quiet as the first innings passed. Still, Bakersfield stayed close, refusing to let the game get out of hand.
As the innings went on, the mood began to shift. Bakersfield started making better contact at the plate, and the dugout energy picked up. Each small breakthrough brought the crowd back into the game, and the Renegades fed off that momentum. By the middle innings, Bakersfield was right there, gaining runs and keeping Fresno within their reach.
The game kept getting closer by the minute, and every pitch felt bigger than the last. What had been a slow, grinding game suddenly turned into a battle. The moment everyone was waiting for finally came.
Trailing runs, the Renegades came together to create a moment that changed everything. Timely hits, smart baserunning and loud support from the stands pushed Bakersfield ahead 5-4. The dugout erupted as the Renegades grabbed that lead. Fresno wasn’t done; they made one final push in the last inning that added tension until the very end. Bakersfield stayed composed, finishing the job and clutching the win as the crowd roared.

The season opener showed exactly what this Bakersfield College team is capable of. It wasn’t perfect, and it wasn’t easy, but the Renegades never stopped believing. A slow start turned into an exciting finish, and with a comeback win at home, Bakersfield College opened the season with confidence, energy and momentum that should carry well beyond opening day.
