“Battle of the Regions” at BC’s Memorial Stadium delivered an incredible
show of strength from regional men’s track and field on Friday Feb. 13.
Cerritos, Sequoias, and Canyons Colleges dominated the meet, stomping into first place
in over half of the competitions. Cerritos took 7, Sequoias 4, and Canyons 2 all taking first place wins.
BC took a first-place finish in the 3k steeplechase with of Edgar Gil.
Of the 19 various running, jumping, and throwing competitions, the Renegades had
some honorable mentions. Jacob Quezeda landed second place in the 800m race.
Freshman Mason Level threw 43.7m for third place in the hammer throw.
Long jump for Christian McCoy Perez and Cordayr Brown yielded 4th and 5th place,
falling short only of Cerritos College.
When asked what is the best thing about track and field? Orlando Zuniga stated, “The competition.”
Zuniga is a sprint and distance runner. He secured fourth place for BC in the 400m hurdles.
Personal records were liberally shattered by athletes at the meet. Josue Valladares of BC
ran a personal record for the 1500m race.
Between competitions, athletes have free time and find opportunities to
cheer for their fellow teammates.
When asked what are athlete’s favorite things to cheer when their teammates run by? Zuniga stated “PR right here! Last stretch!”
Valladares also said, “Keep going! or whatever they need to hear.”
Valladares and Zuniga approved that the best thing to do between events is to drink
water.
Battle of the Regions, besides a fierce competition, gratified the society of athletes.
The track and field harbored athletes from 12 colleges, resting, jogging, or stretching a
common sight from the athletes. The stands were filled humbly but appeared cheerful.
The field erupted in cheer when a race shot off.
When asked about the feeling of standing at the starting line Zuniga said, “Just, calm.”
